Yough River Trail to the Great Allegheny Passage
The Western-Maryland Railroad line through Somerset County was abandoned in the 1970's. The line ran through the country for 46 miles, from Confluence to the Maryland border, and passed through small villages and boroughs including Harnedsville, Fort Hill, Markleton, Rockwood, Garrett, Meyersdale and Deal. There are two tunnels, two viaducts, many bridges and a train station on the Allegheny Highlands Trail. The Allegheny Highlands Trail follows the Casselman River and the Flaugherty Creek as it makes its way through the county. The trail, when completed, will give additional access to the rivers for fishing, kayaking and canoeing. The Allegheny Highlands Trail is a vital link in a project that will create a linear park from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Much like the way in which the transcontinental railroad was built, many groups are working on sections of trail that will ultimately connect, making the dream of a trail from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. a reality.

Another natural feature is Negro Mountain, one of our oldest geological rock formations, lying between Laurel Mountain on the west and Allegheny Mountain on the east.

The Meyersdale Train Station
The Meyersdale Area Historical Society cordially invites you to drop by and see the historic Western Maryland Railway Station at 529 Main Street, Meyersdale. The station will be used as a trailhead facility for the adjoining Allegheny Highlands Trail, a hiking and biking trail currently under development through the Somerset County on the abandoned Western Maryland Railway. More than 16 miles of the Allegheny Highlands Trail is open to bicyclists and hikers as well as cross-country skiers from Garrett west to Markleton. As part of an expansion, the 1900-foot long Salisbury Viaduct, located two miles north of Meyersdale, is decked and trail built from Garrett to the station in Meyersdale. Eventually, the 45-mile Allegheny Highlands Trail will be part of the trail network that will link Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Phone number: (814) 634-0512.
