About the project

In 2012, the Meyersdale Public Library was awarded a grant to digitize selected photographs in its archival collection. More than 530 photographs between the years 1880-1930 were scanned. The online collection includes digitized photographs, postcards, and glass negatives from Somerset County, PA.

This project is the result of a year-long effort by a team of four individuals consisting of library staff and local contractors, to plan, organize, scan, create descriptions (metadata), edit, and upload photographs and data. We also worked with a metadata consultant to help us finalize the data dictionary, and our webmaster to update the genealogy section of our website, and integration with the Flickr API.

The goal of the project is to share genealogical and historical images at no cost to the public, while keeping the originals from being excessively handled. It is our hope that you can use these photographs for genealogy, school projects, local research, or whatever else your heart desires.

We would also be happy to share any specifics with other libraries wishing to do similar projects. As a small rural library with sometimes limited resources, we completed the project successfully, and so can you.

This project has been (partially) funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. The Meyersdale Public Library Friends of the Library also contributed to this project, and Access PA provided CONTENTdm software and online hosting.

Viewing the collection

The photographs are available through our website (above), Access PA and Flickr. This was done with the user in mind, as each resource has different benefits and capabilities.

All photos from the library that have been posted to Flickr are available at main Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/meyersdalepubliclibrary/. The photos in this particular set are available here. Flickr offers users the ability to comment on the photographs, which we strongly encourage. Comments with identifying information such as names, dates, or places will be further researched by library staff so the metadata can be updated as necessary. Please note that inappropriate comments will be deleted. Our Flickr collection also has tags, which makes for more refined searching. The collection can be searched or browsed, and Flickr users have the ability to save favorite photographs to their account.

Copyright Information

Digital images are copyrighted to the Meyersdale Public Library. The photos may be used for non-commercial, educational purposes as long as a credit statement is included. For all other uses, please contact the Meyersdale Public Library.

Ordering Information

The library can email TIFF images for a service charge of $10 per photo. The TIFF images are a much higher quality than the online JPG images, and have the ability to zoom in to see faces, landmarks, and other details. When ordering, please include the title and item number of the photograph. Orders can be placed in person, by mail, by phone, or through our contact us form. We do not charge usage fees and we do not yet send CDs with images. We also do not offer print reproductions at this time.

Survey

Please consider filling out a survey about this collection. This will help us to better evaluate if the goals of the project were met. The survey may be accessed here.
