The Meyersdale Public Library will host author Mary Ann Kinsinger for a book signing on Friday, June 7th, at 7:00pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Mary Ann Kinsinger grew up Old Order Amish in Pocahontas, PA. After spending several years in Missouri, Mary Ann, her husband, and four children moved back to Somerset County, PA. Her writing began with a blog called “A Joyful Chaos”, and led to her writing a series of four books.
The series follows the life adventures of a young Amish girl named Lily, who must face a mean teacher, a difficult friend, and a move to a new community. While written for readers age 8-12, these books will charm children and adults alike.
Coauthored by Suzanne Woods Fisher, an acclaimed Amish writer, the currently released books include “Life with Lily” and “A New Home for Lily.” Two additional books in the series will be released this summer and fall.
Books will be available for purchase at the event, and light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, so please call the library at 814-634-0512 to register if you plan to attend.
The Meyersdale Public Library has been awarded a grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies in the amount of $3,700 to go toward waterproofing the library’s basement. The remainder of the funds needed, over $11,000, was provided by the Meyersdale Public Library Friends of the Library group.
This project is vital because it prevents further water damage the library’s basement walls and heaters, prevents interference with the library’s electrical and telephone equipment, and will keep standing water out of the building. This project has been in the works for some time, and now thanks to these very generous contributions, the library can complete its waterproofing.
The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies strives to help those in Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria counties by using donated funds to financially support local communities.
The Friends of the Library are the primary fundraising entity for the library. Their annual Wine Tasting at the Mansion and Death by Chocolate events bring in the necessary funds required to help the library qualify for state aid. The money raised goes towards many different needs for the library, including special events, books, furniture, and building projects.
The next building project the library has planned is to install a handicap accessible front door to make it easier for our patrons to enter and exit the building. Any contributions made toward this effort are tax deductible.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON JUNE 3RD AND JUNE 4TH FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF WATERPROOFING CONSTRUCTION.
April 15th-20th is National Library Week. The Meyersdale Public Library will be holding several special activities to celebrate.
• All patrons who return overdue library materials during National Library Week will have their overdue fines forgiven.
• Stop by any time that week to enter the Jelly Bean Guessing Game. Closest guess to the actual count wins the jar of jelly beans. Only one guess per person.
• Design a Bookmark contest open to grades K-12. Official rules available at the library.
• Wii Mario coin battle on Saturday, April 20th from 10am-noon. All ages are welcome to attend.

The Meyersdale Public Library recently received a grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to replace water-damaged baseboard heating. This grant contributes toward the library’s basement waterproofing project, which aims to completely prevent water from seeping into the basement and causing building damage. The library is extremely thankful to the Community Foundation for their support with this project.

As we are nearing the end of our transition period between Millennium and Evergreen, our new policies will soon be fully enforced. We have been flexible to allow our patrons time to adjust, but by September 1st, you will no longer be able to check out without a library card.
In order to check out books, place a hold, renew your materials, or use a computer, you must present a library card (you do not need to present your card if you are just returning materials). In the event you have temporarily misplaced or forgotten your library card, we will accept a photo ID as a temporary substitute. If you do not have your library card or photo ID present at check out, we can hold your items for 24 hours until you come back with one. If you have lost your library card, we can replace it for you with presentation of a photo ID.
This policy is important because it allows library staff to pull up your account quickly and accurately, and ensures the integrity and privacy of your personal information.
Library cards can be thought of as credit cards; you are responsible for anything borrowed on your card. Always provide the library with your current contact information, and if your card is lost or stolen, contact the library immediately. For more detailed information about our policies, please visit: http://www.meyersdalelibrary.com/services/.
Our 2012 annual fundraiser is now underway! This year is especially critical for several reasons.
The first is that state funding may be cut for libraries yet again. State budget cuts have added up to a significant loss to libraries over the past few years. The proposed state budget for the upcoming year, if approved, would cut library funding by 5%.
The second is that the library is undertaking a project to completely waterproof its basement and replace corroded baseboard heating. Water damage in the basement has been an ongoing problem and in addition to leaving a musty smell in the library, it affects our electrical equipment, is inconvenient for individuals that use our basement, and rules out future library expansion into the basement.
We know 2012-2013 will be an exciting year as grant opportunities and community support have afforded us the chance to offer a Civil War presentation, replace aged computer equipment, purchase a new children’s rug, and begin a photograph digitization project to share some amazing historic photographs.
We ask that this year, you graciously provide as much as you can to help fund the basement project and to keep the library operating smoothly. All donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to the library or submitted via the PayPal link on our website.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the library over the years. All contributions, whether big or small, help us to keep offering quality services to you and others, year after year.
All prior links on the website to the Millenium system have now been replaced by our Evergreen links. The Evergreen system will load by default within an IFRAME beneath the main header and menu for other library features to make it easier for you to navigate between the Evergreen system and the Library’s web pages.
